THE POSTER DESIGN
I started by sourcing some existing web design and print collateral for research purposes. Tropicana has a clear colour palette that reflects the lush flora and orange sunsets that can be found on picturesque tropical islands. I've looked into specifically illustrative approaches to the poster and branding design because we don't have the ability to take our own photos and in buying/taking photos from online we run the risk of appearing too much like stock photography especially given the overuse of cliche tropical vistas. There are some obvious motifs which I'd like to replicated including, tropical palms, pineapples, surfboards. We are also including flamingo's in our set design which will be laser cut so we want to appropriate that iconography across to our marketing material. Below is a snippet of my research for the branding and creative collateral for our event.

Next I looked at the colour palettes for the branding design. After looking at some initial colour schemes I had feedback from Nicole that we needed to ensure green was our signature colour rather than a tropical orange/red. This is to better match the dominant colour scheme of the set design which will be the green leaves of the palm trees. Below is my colour palette research followed by our resolved colour palette.
Next I've looked at the logo. I want the main focus to be the 'Tropicana' copy and the 'club' aspect to be secondary. I've used a font called Cubano for the main Tropicana copy. It's nice and told and works really well in block capitals, but has a rounded handcrafted feel that reminisces to the tribal aesthetic of the tropics. The linked Club copy is set in Cycncill. The typography is first set below:
Next I've further customised the fonts to create a more custom fit logo. I've extended the twirl of the C in 'club' to wrap above and behind the T of 'tropicana' to create some visual layering. I've also drawn some palm free leaves that fan out from the b of 'club' to help balance the logo a little more as it was feeling quite left heavy, and to bring the tropical feeling into the type so it communicates that without any supporting visuals or graphics. The next revision is below.
I originally looked at some quick colour concepts with the typography to test the contrast ratio of the two levels of text and the background. Because the Club is smaller, more detailed characters and should be read first I want that to contrast the most with the background colour. These tests are here: The bottom test is the most successful I think.
Tama is looking into vinyl cutting some stickers that we can use to promote the event and to help us easily apply branding to any physical objects we desire. This means the logo needs to be cut in a full shape for the cutting machine. I've outlined the general shape and given the cutter some bleed which creates a nice bold outline shape.
After clarifying the logo I've looked at creating a pattern which will incorporate the iconography that I liked in the research phase into a graphic style that can be applied across print, web and other mediums. The shapes are based from ones available for free on 'The Noun Project' they are below.
It's super easy to combine this pattern with the colour and colour scheme to create an easy indication of how a poster could look (without any set list details yet)
